Justin's Hockey Game

Here are some photos from Justin's hockey game. Justin plays defense, so his job is to be “the last man back”, disrupt the other team’s offense, clear the puck out of danger in his zone, and make passes up ice to his forwards. He takes pride in shutting the other team down! J He doesn’t score often, but has a BIG impact on the success of the team. That’s why, in many of the photos, you will see him passing the puck instead of shooting.

Brandon's Hockey Game

Brandon's hockey team, the Jr. Bulls competed in the first tournament of the season over Labor Day weekend. They did very well overall, finishing in 2nd place. They had quite a run, going 4 & 0 before they were finally taken down in the championship game. I am very proud of Brandon and the Jr. Bulls!

Disney Cruise - Alaska

This summer, we took a big, family vacation to Alaska aboard the Disney Wonder. Michele's parents joined us as well as Kent and Pi's families. Mom & Dad were scheduled to come along, but they were not feeling up to it. We flew to Vancouver a few days early and had a great time sightseeing before we boarded the ship. Sampson Cay

Kent & his family joined us this year for our annual trip to Sampson Cay, Exuma, Bahamas. We had a great time relaxing, boating, snorkeling, fishing, etc. My "water-proof" camera died on the first day, so I was only able to get a handful of shots with my iPhone and a disposable camera we bought.

Grand Cayman

We returned to Grand Cayman for the first time in many years and really enjoyed it! We did lots of swimming, snorkeling, fishing, and relaxing on the beach. We also took in some of the local attractions such as the Turtle Farm, Pirate Caves, and Blow Hole. We even got to watch the Lightning play Pittsburg on TV at Margaritaville! It was a fabulous trip and I'm sure we will return again soon.

Deer Valley, Utah

We went on our annual family ski trip to Deer Valley, UT (near Park City). The weather was less-than-perfect, but we made the best of it and had a fun time anyway! We went tubing the first day and then skiied the next three. No broken bones, so I'd say it was a good trip. See all the photos here:

Circus

Last week, Michele & I took the kids out to the FL State Fairgrounds for a behind the scenes tour of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus practice facility, where they were putting the finishing touches on the Fully Charged show before it opened. We met the Feld family (owners) and the daughters gave us a very nice tour. We got to see lots of performers practicing their moves, lots of cool backstage stuff, and then we went out back to see the animals. The boys even got to feed the elephants!

Tonight, we went and saw the show at the St. Pete Times Forum. We stopped by the Patron Party for a while and then headed down to the seats to enjoy the show. The kids even got to go out onto the circus floor and watch from some special seats in the ring. We all had a great time and hope to do it again next year!

New York City

We took the family to New York City again this year (after skipping 2009) to get some Christmas Cheer. We had a wonderful time skating at Rockefeller Center, seeing the Rockettes, going up in the Empire State Building, playing in Central Park, and seeing a Broadway Show (The Addams Family). We got lucky with the weather: Cold, but clear. Great for flying.

ICE & Universal, Orlando

We took the kids to Orlando this weekend to get a little Christmas cheer. Our first stop was the Gaylord Palms Resort. We saw some great shows on Friday night and then spent Saturday checking out their ICE & SNOW Exhibits --brrrr! Saturday afternoon, we headed over to Universal for a few rides and then caught the Macy's Parade at sunset. Sunday morning, we had breakfast with the Grinch, rode some more rides, and enjoyed the Grinch live show before heading home to Tampa. It was a fun & busy weekend!

Playing Hockey with the Lightning

Several members of the Tampa Bay Lightning have kids on the same travel team as our son, Justin. The team hosted a Parent / Player game last week, and we had a BLAST! It was a big thrill for me to skate & play hockey with Marty St. Louis, Brett Clark, and Guy Boucher --I think I had more fun than the kids! :-) Justin played goalie and Cameron was a forward. Atlantis Resort, Nassau, Bahamas

It was windy, rainy, & chilly for the Gasparilla Parade this year. The weather was OK in the morning, when we met up with old friends at the UT brunch. The Royal Krewe of Sparta named Dad honorary King of the Krewe for 2010 and presented him with a ceremonial helmet. The weather deteriorated rapidly once we arrived at the staging area on Bayshore and waited for the parade to begin. We stood around in wind & drizzle for a couple hours until it was finally time to move out. We were wondering if anyone would show up to watch the parade, but there were plenty of people lining the route. Here are a few photos:

Cameron's Hockey Practice

It's amazing how much Cameron's skating has progressed since he started playing hockey in the Fall. He must have fallen 100 times during his first practice, but he kept getting back up. Kart Racing

Brandon & I joined a few of my buddies for some Kart racing in Palmetto on Wednesday afternoon. These were not your typical kiddie go-carts. These were serious racing machines that topped 40mph on the back stretch. We all had tons of fun and Brandon did great. Can't wait to go back!

The Airplane Owners & Pilot's Association is having their 1st Annual Summit in Tampa this year and they have a lot of aircraft on display at Peter O Knight Airport this weekend. Michele and I went over for a little while on Thursday afternoon and then I went back at dawn on Friday to see the hot air balloon launch. Atlantis Resort

The kids had a long weekend at school, so we decided to take one last little getaway before the baby arrives. We stayed at the Atlantis in Nassau, Bahamas and had a wonderful time. Brandon goes SCUBA diving

Brandon turned 10 over the summer and is now old enough to get SCUBA certified. We decided to introduce him to diving with the "discover SCUBA" program at Brendal's Dive Center in Green Turtle Cay, Abaco, Bahamas. Robbie & his son (little Robbie, also 10) joined us as did Brian. Brandon & Robbie did really well on their first dive! We enjoyed a great dive, then Brendal took us to a deserted beach and cooked a delicious lunch of grouper & lobster over a fire pit on the beach. After lunch, we hand-fed the stingrays that hang around this area. The next day, we did some snorkeling on our own. We went on a Disney Cruise with Grandman & Pop-Pop Cardin, Kent & his family, and Perry & his family. Poor Pop-pop got sick the first night and was confined to his room for most of the cruise, but the rest of us had a great time!

Green Turtle Cay, Bahamas

We spent a couple days in Green Turtle Cay, Bahamas with Robbie & his family snorkeling, swimming, & relaxing. Of course, there was the obligatory visit to Nippers, but we managed to moderate our consumption this time! :-) The next day, we went on a snorkel / picnic trip with Brendal. We enjoyed some of the best snorkeling I've ever seen with beautiful reefs, lots of fish, eels, even sharks! After snorkeling, he took us to a deserted island and cooked up a delicious seafood lunch over an open fire while we hand fed the stingrays. It was forecast to rain all weekend in the islands, so we came up with plan "B" at the last minute: Attend the family reunion in Princeton, WV and then head to Pigeon Forge, TN to see Dollywood.
